Riverdance, tango, flamenco fire up the stage

An Irish Riverdance spectacular, Argentine tango and a new Spanish flamenco version of “Carmen” will be staged next month and in January.

On December 6 and 7, the producers of Riverdance will stage a new music and dance spectacular “Heartbeat of Home” at the Shanghai Grand Stage. It’s part of Irish Riverdance’s world tour starting in Beijing.

The high-energy show features dynamic elements of traditional Irish, Latin and Afro-Cuban music and dance. The score is composed by Golden Globe nominated composer Brian Byrne.

To attract younger audiences, the show employs high-definition 3D projection technology and has an engaging narrative structure.

In addition, two celebrated dance troupes will stage Argentine tango and a new Spanish flamenco version of “Carmen” involving ingenious choreography and spectacular stage effects. Performances will be in December and January.

Mora Godoy’s Argentinian Tango Company will perform from December 23 to 25.

Godoy, considered the most prominent dancer and choreographer in Argentina, choreographs and directs the upcoming program.

Tango is known for its fire, and the performances will be a mixture of tango and modern dance, salsa and tango-milonga.

Tango dancers are envied for their extraordinary footwork, and even Argentine football players dance tango.

On January 2 and 3, the Antonio Andrade Flamenco company will stage a new version of “Carmen,” praised as being more visually compelling, condensed and emotional than earlier productions.

Andrade, a famous flamenco dancer, creates and choreographs the new production of the famous story about the tragically seductive cigarette girl, Carmen.
