Russian ballet ‘Swan Lake’

THE well-known Russian State Ballet will present the “Swan Lake” to ballet lovers in Shanghai. The show is a classic love story between a prince  and a princess. The evil wizard Von Rothbart turns Princess Odette and her companions into a fl ock of swans by the enchanted lake, and they can only return to human forms at night. When prince Siegfried hunts for the swan, he falls in love with Odette and is told that his love can break Rothbart’s spell. In the third act of the show, the dancer who plays Odile is required to do 32 turns with fouette, a move noted for its extreme diffi culty.

Anna Shcherbakova, the winner of “International Ballet Competition,” will take this role. Ballet companies in the past have presented the  endings of “Swan Lake” as either a tragedy or a reunion, but the Russian State Ballet will combine these endings and create a unique one.
