Russia’s oldest national theater brings Gogol to Shanghai

THE Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theater, Russia’s oldest national theater, will bring the classic Nikolai Gogol play “The Inspector General” to the Shanghai Grand Theater on August 12 and 13.

The show is directed by Gogol expert and Russian stage veteran Valery Fokin. Born in Moscow in 1946, Fokin has directed shows around the world and received numerous international awards for his theater work.

“There are many things which are common among people in other countries, but there are also differences, and it is important to understand this new context and new people,” he explained in an interview with Shanghai Daily.

“Going on tour in other countries with the same show gives you a wide range of audiences. Only after several evenings you can feel the local audience and understand how you should develop your approach in order to reach them,” said the director.

“The value of this play for me though is that every time you watch it, you can find something relevant... I hope that in China as well our production will be perceived not as a pure illustration of the classical play, but as a living contemporary pronouncement,” Fokin went on to explain.

The theater — known as the Alexandrinsky for short — was founded by a Russian senate decree and signed by Empress Elizabeth on August 30, 1756, the day of Saint Alexander Nevsky. The Alexandrinsky is widely seen as the progenitor of all Russian theaters. Its foundation also marks the start of Russian state policy in the field of theatrical arts.

Contact between China and the Alexandrinsky started as early as 1935, when Peking opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) staged a performance at the famed Russian theater.

Fokin himself also keeps a close eye on Chinese theater, attending Chinese performances whenever possible.

“The Inspector General” will be performed in Russian dialogue, with English and Chinese subtitles.
