Summer TV season promises loads of new reality shows

THE summertime television season is heating up with an array of new programs covering a wide range of subjects and genres.
Reality TV shows continue to be among the highest rated programs on air and Dragon TV will premiere several new reality shows this month.
“The 15 of Us,” a reality show produced by Tencent, is slated to run for a whole year. It will follow 15 city dwellers asked to live together in a remote mountainous area for one year. The contestants will have only a shed, an old-fashioned telephone, several cows and chickens and a small amount of money to make ends meet.
“Going to School” is a new reality show based on a successful South Korean format.
Celebrities are told to go back to school as ordinary students. They will work with teenagers to complete various challenging missions.
The second season of “Dream Maker” invites talented interior designers to make affordable “dream houses” for ordinary families. Each designer is given a limited budget.
Meanwhile, CBN will start broadcasting a competition this month among wannabe entrepreneurs who pitch business ideas to potential investors. The show has already attracted hundreds of applicants.
Art Channel will air a series of art lessons this summer covering music, dance, traditional Chinese operas and Chinese culture.
The channel has also lined up classic movies from world cinema including “Gone With the Wind,” “Million Pound Note” and “A Chinese Odyssey.”
The Documentary Channel will launch a few new Chinese productions. Many of them document hot social issues such as the college entrance examination.
Channel Young will debut the outdoor game show “Crazy Heartbeat.” The show teams celebrities with ordinary folks and tasks them with a series of physical challenges.
