Tale of a china rabbit all about love

MUSICAL-DRAMA “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” adapted from the 2006 children’s novel by Kate DiCamillo, will stage at Shanghai Grand Theater as the first theater performance in China of this globally well-known fairy tale about a china rabbit.

“The adventure of this china rabbit Edward is leading people back to the purest desires of emotion. Both in the original book and the upcoming drama, the story is about love, being loved, and looking for love,” says Liu Suxi, the director.

As summarized by a quote from the book: “If you have no intention of loving or being loved, then the whole journey is pointless.”

Edward Tulane is a china rabbit owned by a little girl, Abilene. This china rabbit enjoys a pleasant but vain life until he falls off a boat and spends 297 days on the ocean floor until a storm frees him from the seabed and a passing fisherman find him. The man takes him home to his wife, and Edward is renamed and made to wear dresses.

Four main actors will complete the drama of 90 minutes, playing various roles, singing, completing the costume changes and changing the stage scene.

“Instead of the ordinary process of play writing, directing and music composing, creating together in workshop is the trendiest way in theater, which inspires us to be more creative,” Liu says.

Liu said a big challenge is to make a drama adapted from a fairy tale for adult audiences, and music helps. As a result, numerous original songs composed especially for this drama help present characters’ emotions.

Young Chinese musician Tan Hao composed all the songs and the director completed all the lyrics. Lin Sensen, one of the actors, is an experienced musical performer who played a role in the Chinese-version of the musical “Mama Mia!”

The award-winning book is widely known by Chinese readers because of a recent popular Korean TV series, “My Love from the Stars.” The book is the leading man’s favorite book and shows up several times in the series.

“To be honest, I have not watched this popular TV series, and was recommend by my female colleagues to read this book,” Liu says. “I was touched by the book and the theme of ‘love and being loved’ is the most important focus of our show.”
