Ten days to highlight Kunqu Opera

SHANGHAI Grand Theater will host a series of Kunqu Opera performances over a period of 10 days for the upcoming season. Many classics and excerpts will be presented by the artists of Northern Kunqu Opera Theater from May 28 to June 5.

According to Zhang Zhe, director of Shanghai Grand Theater, the serial performances are also part of the "Shakespeare 400 Season," which runs through the entire year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

"This year also marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Tang Xianzu, a famous playwright who lived in the same time of Shakespeare," says Zhang. "Both of them had a profound impact on the development of theater."

"The Peony Pavilion," a representative masterpiece written by Tang, will be staged on June 1. Different from former stage productions of the classic, this version will focus on the romantic line between Du Liniang, daughter of a county official, and young scholar Liu Mengmei. Young talented performers from the Northern Kunqu Opera Theater will take center stage and original vocal excerpts of the play will be reserved.

The literary classic "A Dream of Red Mansions" will also be interpreted as Kunqu Opera on June 4 and 5.

Told from the perspective of Jia Baoyu, the play centers on the rise and fall of a big feudal family in ancient China. It is also a tragic love story between Jia and Lin Daiyu, who rebels against social norms of the noble class.

Officials from Northern Kunqu Opera Theater say that they are also considering collaborating with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to present a brand new symphonic Kunqu Opera version next year.

The theater will also bring a newly-created historical play about the life and achievements of revered Chinese philosopher Confucius on May 28.

The show, set to the backdrop of the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC), will feature exquisite ancient Chinese costumes, scenes and musical instruments to take people back to that time.

The performing season will also present Kunqu Opera lectures as well as workshops for the public.
