The Proms comes to town
"THE Proms" - or to give it its full title, the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC - is an annual summer season of classical music concerts in London and other parts of Britain that encourages a casual atmosphere both on and off stage.
And this unique atmosphere will reach Shanghai this summer, as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is bringing a Proms-style concert to the city.
The event will be staged at Shanghai Oriental Art Center on July 12, right before the start of the Proms in London.
At a typical Proms concert, the conductor and performers dress in casual suits, while audiences can enjoy more freedom than usual. They needn't sit formally and can enjoy a close interaction with the orchestra, as "promenading" is encouraged.
A relatively relaxed set of programs also helps create a casual atmosphere at concerts.
Short programs sometimes replace longer performances while unlike most classical concerts that schedule heavier programs later in the concert, the Proms tends to place serious works in the first half, while more upbeat pieces feature in the second.
To mark the 150th anniversary of Debussy's birth, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales will play "Prelude a Lapres-midi Dun Faune." Faure's "Pavane" and Ravel's "Bolero" are also on their set list, providing peaceful melody yet with strong rhythm.
In Britain, Elgar's patriotic "Land of Hope and Glory" provides the traditional finale to the Proms each year, when flag-waving audiences stand up and sing along.
Shanghai audiences are promised their own version of the Proms finale as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales plans to play the famous Chinese song "My Motherland" at the end of the concert, and invite audience members to sing along.
Date: July 12, 7:30pm
Address: 425 Dingxiang Rd, Pudong
Tickets: 80-1,280 yuan (US$12.56-200.98)
Tel: 962-388
