Top German boys’ choir to sing varied lineup

ThE Tölz Boys’ Choir, one of the top boys’ choirs in the world and based in Germany, will present a concert on August 17 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
The choir, established in 1956 in the Bavarian town of Bad Tölz and, since 1970, based in Munich, will perform for the first time in China with a lineup of 42 boys.
Known in German as the Tölzer Knabenchor, it is among the elite in its category, along with the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Paris Boys’ Choir.
Members of the choir have received systematic and strict vocal music training to learn the most authentic and traditional baroque singing skills.
Each year the choir hosts around 250 concerts worldwide. It has performed with many famous conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt.
The songs they plan to perform in China cover a wide range of genres from medieval music to modern music, including folk music, pastoral song, motet, church music and opera.
But singing classical and baroque music is when the choir really shines.
According to the concert’s organizer, the choir will perform the works of Bach and Chinese and foreign ballads. Conductor Ralph Ludwig will lead the choir and organists to present Bach’s “Motette BWV 229” and “Motette BWV 225.” They will also perform some famous pop songs including “Money, Money, Money,” “We are the Champions” and “Heal the World.”
