Traditional music concert wraps up Spring Fest
The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra of traditional instruments will stage a spring concert on the day after the Lantern Festival at Daning Theatre.
The “Music in a Harmonious World” concert tomorrow will feature “Overture for Spring Festival” and “Rhyme of the Homeland.”
The orchestra will perform both large-scale orchestra works and folk pieces, according to conductor Wang Fujian, chairman and artistic director of the troupe.
The Lantern Festival continues the festive spirit of the Chinese New Year and concludes the holiday season. The musical program features well-known traditional works and new, commissioned works, according to Wang.
To celebrate the Year of the Horse, the orchestra will perform “All Horses Galloping,” originally composed by Qi Baoligao for Mongolian string instruments.
Founded in 1952, Shanghai Chinese Orchestra is China’s first full-scale modern orchestra using traditional musical instruments. Its repertoire contains a wide selection of works for strings and woodwinds, as well as percussion ensembles. It has commissioned many works such as “The Sun Ritual” and “Dream Interpretation” for erhu (two-stringed fiddle) and orchestra.
