US jazz pianist brings inventive style to city

On Thursday, the avant-garde jazz pianist Uri Caine will present his solo concert at Qianshuiwan Art Center, his first in Shanghai. Organized by Caya Promotion, the concert will include a solo set from Caine’s CD “Solitaire.”

Born in Philadelphia in the United States, Caine began studying piano at 12 with French jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer. He then studied music composition at the University of Pennsylvania with George Rochberg.

It’s hard to categorize Caine simply as a jazz musician — he is exceptionally capable of re-composing the most rigid classical pieces and has successfully established his own presence by fusing academic compositions with his inventive style.

His work has put him in the company of the most impressive and innovative musicians.

The recording of “Primal Light” was a milestone in Caine’s career. It is an adaptation of the music of Gustav Mahler and finished in 1996, after Caine joined Winter & Winter, the German indie label.

Caine spent a year immersing himself in the music and life of Mahler and what he did is far beyond simple rhythmic modification. He reinvented it and drew on various contemporary music styles such as jazz, Latin, fusion, funk, free jazz and New Music. The recording also was awarded the best Mahler album in 1997.

Caine continued to explore the work of Bach, Beethoven, Schumann and Wagner and gained further fame. His “Uri Caine Ensemble plays Mozart,” commissioned for Mozart's 250th birthday, garnered praise. In 2009, his work “The Othello Syndrome” was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Classical Crossover Album.

He started his world tour in May with his latest interpretations of Gershwin’s masterpiece “Rhapsody in Blue.”
