Wasteful and frugal rulers

YANG Guang (AD 569-618) of the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618) was probably the most wasteful emperor when it came to burning incense. He would burn more than 200 war chariots filled with precious agarwood on the eve of every Lunar New Year.

By contrast, on the Lunar New Year's Day, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) emperors would burn incense made of fragrant fruit leftovers, such as orange, pear and apple peels. This incense ceremony at the imperial palace demonstrated the merits of frugality.
