Young artists get back to nature

TWO years ago, 37 young artists from Shanghai and Hangzhou gathered together in Yunlang, a village on the outskirts of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. These intrepid artists participated in hiking, camping and creative projects in the village for 24 hours and then exhibited their works at AIKE-DELLARCO gallery in Shanghai.

It explored different ways to articulate the interaction between art and nature.

This year, “The Sun” is a followup to that exhibition and will be held in two spaces — V ART Center and Minsheng Art Museum.

During the exhibition, 25 young artists from Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province will show their latest works of modern art as well as give lectures and performances.

“The Sun,” the theme of the exhibition, is based on Taiyang (Sun) Village in Hangzhou, where the young artists visited this year. As a constant physical presence, it also embodies the rich inner energy of the artists.

“These artists use a relatively thrifty and simple way to provide a view reflecting on their observations to the world,” says Chao Jiaxing, curator of V Art Center. “In the same environment, various industries or even different roles in the same industry are facing identical situations.”

Away from the art market, they use a primary way (hiking and camping) to create and inspire their works, while at the same time, bravely expose their defects through art.

“Under this unpleasant weather, you need to find the common public memories — the pure period of everyone’s life — to have resonance, like your childhood,” Chao says.
