Zhang, Qiu’s works go under hammer

SOME of the items that will go under the hammer at the 2016 Poly Autumn Auction can be previewed at Shanghai Grand Theater next week.

The 2016 Poly Autumn Auction will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing from December 3 to 7. A cluster of ink-wash paintings, calligraphy, antiques plus some modern and contemporary artworks will be put up for bidding.

The highlight of the auction is Zhang Daqian’s daunting work in silk — done in 1965 — that is 3.44-meter long and 1.73-meter wide. The ink splash style painting titled “The snowcaps in Swiss” was done in his late years.

Zhang (1899-1983) was a famous artist and a promoter of traditional Chinese arts. He was a master of Chinese painting and highly skilled in calligraphy, seal cutting and classical poetry. In 1949, Zhang began exhibiting his works around the world, including Argentina, Brazil and the US. In 1953, he met Pablo Picasso that was “viewed as a summit between the Eastern and Western art masters.”

This painting is a rare one among all of Zhang’s paintings because of its size, subject and material. The bottom price for this work has been set at 100 million yuan (US$ 14.78 million).

Another big draw is a painting by Qiu Ying (1494-1552), who thrived during Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Qiu was an expert in using different brush strokes to depict different kinds of people. This is the first time that Qiu’s painting titled “Tang Poetry” is being seen in the public.

The start price has been set at 80 million yuan.
