Rehearsal of life theme for Biennale

THE 8th Shanghai Biennale, which will kick off on October 23, recently announced its theme and names of the curating team.

The theme "Rehearsal" has been chosen by the Biennale, on the basis that each day of our life is geared toward rehearsing for the next day.

"Everything is in rehearsal and nothing has been decided," explained by Gao Shiming, one of the curators.

Gao, deputy director of the Advanced School of Art and Humanities at the China Academy of Art, Fan Di'an, director of the National Art Museum of China, and Li Lei, director of Shanghai Art Museum, are the three curators for 2010 Shanghai Biennale.

"Rehearsal is not a metaphor for a form of exhibition, but a way of thinking and operating strategy," Gao points out. "The event aims to invite a wide range of participants: artists, curators, critics, collectors, museum directors and audience members to rehearse in the Biennale."

It's "a fertile theater to reflect on the relations between artistic experimentation and the art system, between individual creativity and the public domain," Gao says.

The three-month event, usually held in September, has been postponed this year to the end of October.

"We want to purposely avoid the World Expo 2010," says Hua Yi, the curatorial assistant.

"Our aim is to attract a new flood of people who are keen on Chinese contemporary art after the World Expo 2010."

"Exposition" and "Recapitulation" are two parts of the theme's trial and experimentation.

"Exposition also refers to 'rehearsal tournaments'," Gao adds.

The "rehearsal tournaments" are scheduled to start in July and end in October after a three-stage relay.

The Biennale plans to invite around 20 influential thinkers, curators and artists from around the world to participate in the "rehearsal tournaments."
