Contest taps creativity in practical design and art

Putuo residents are taking part in the 1st Shanghai Citizens Art Festival by designing creative and useful items for everyday life, creating art work, animation and games.
The deadline for submissions is August 31 at the cultural activity centers in their neighborhoods. More than 800 submissions have been received citywide and more are coming in.
Titled “Dialogue with Life, Let Creativity Speak,” the competition is co-organized by the Putuo District government, the district cultural bureau, the Shanghai Mass Art Center and M50 the artists hub and tourist center in Putuo.
After submissions are received, an initial selection will take place in each district or county.
The final 100 winners for the entire city will be announced this fall.
The event includes not only the main competition, but also various exhibitions, forums and markets.
“Citizens have great creativity and imagination but many problems occur when people try to convert them into actual products,” says Wang Yi, manager of M50.
“Some designs cannot be mass produced and some ideas are creative but not practical for daily life.
“We hope some submissions can be manufactured and enter the market, realizing the dream of citizens to be creative and make items of use to others — and to benefit economically from their sale.”
The organizing committee works with dozens of professional design institutions to help designers in the competition produce practical items and improve their chances of becoming professional designers.
“A series of activities aims to generate enthusiasm for design. Today they design for a competition, and tomorrow they may design items for a better life and find happiness,” says an official with Putuo Cultural Bureau whose name is unrevealed.
