Vague paintings allow viewers to look at themselves

ARTIST Liu Weijian is hosting a solo exhibition, “Under the Sun,” at ShanghART H-Space. More than 20 acrylic paintings he created in the last three years are on display.

Curator and art critic Demetrio Paparoni says Liu captures the emotions and feelings associated with the coldness of the night, the worry of getting lost, and the fear of moving forward.

In a journey into both reality and our inner world, “(the artist) lacks a specific purpose. Instead his creations are animated by a tension with something that is not clearly defined, and they find their purpose within themselves.”

Liu was born in central China’s Hunan Province in 1981. He now lives and works in Shanghai after graduating from Shanghai Normal University of Art in 2005.

His recent exhibitions include “The Idea before Sunrise” at Galeria Yusto, Giner, Malaga, Spain (2012); “Farewell my Country” — Liu Weijian Solo Exhibition, at Gallery Louis Vuitton Maison, Hong Kong (2011); and “China Power Station,” Part IV, at Pinacoteca Agnelli, Torino, Italy (2011).
