Volunteers help elders beat heat

Around 1,000 senior citizens live alone in Yichuan subdistrict and many volunteers are taking time every day to make sure elders are all right during the heat wave.
Many seniors visit their local activity center every day in the heat.
Volunteers escort them from home to the center in the morning, prepare their lunch, and later escort them home in the afternoon.
They ensure the air-conditioning is turned on in the seniors’ homes.
The subdistrict pays each activity center 500 yuan (US$81.57) in total for general care of elders.
During the summer, 2,800 Yichuan seniors with special needs receive regular visits and get the help they need.
Around 150 lunches are delivered to them daily.
