A pesticide-free farm proves to be boon for locals

NESTLED at scenic and low-carbon Chongming Island, the 500jia (500 families) Farm in Jianshe Town offers pesticide-free vegetables.
It also offers online shopping and delivery, meaning fresh and nutritious vegetables can reach users directly.
Packages can be tailor-made offering more than 100 kinds of vegetables.
“When my daughter was born, I started looking for ecological farms,” said Wang Gaoxiang, CEO of 500jia.
“The effort was disappointing. So I decided to rent out fields and grow the vegetables myself.”
Wang found support as more and more people joined him. The 150-hectare field on Chongming Island has attracted 500 families since 2014.
With open and clear planting and packing process, the farm uses organic fertilizer, manual weeding and physical pest control to ensure the quality and the safety of the vegetables.
Customers are invited to visit the farm, talk with farmers and try out the freshly picked vegetables.

Every bag of vegetables includes cooking and nutrition reference. The one-week, one-month or one-year package can be discontinued anytime.
The farm is also an ideal place to have fun. You can pick vegetables, transfer tomato sprouts and go fishing. On May 15, a group of “little apprentice” aged between 3 to 9 years old visited the farm.
The one-day “Little apprentice of financial intelligence” activity by Hermes Education takes the kids closer to nature.
“The most interesting part is the radish picking game,” said Xuan Kailin, a Grade 2 student. “I learned the importance of teamwork and to respect farmers. I will never waste food.”
“I am very curious about different function of each kind of vegetable,” said Mike Sun who is 8 years old.
During the class, the students were told that the grape skin contains polyphenols, tannic acid and anthocyanidin that can bring down the blood lipid level and accelerate fat decomposition.
500jia has also teamed up with Cafe & Meal Muji, Fruit Day, Baosteel and Ping’an Bank. Work is already underway on its 149-hectare third farm. It will grow seasonal vegetables, poultry and herbs. It will also have a glass house for cooking, painting and other activities.
