Art leads to inner reflection

I like visual art because it has the power to discover and express beauty in every situation. Beautiful art work does not necessarily always possess a beautiful message. It often expresses the sorrow and anguish people experience in society.

However, usually art work that possesses a darker meaning is more impressive and spectacular. It is because art is a tool that allows us to transform an òunbeautyó into a beauty. But most importantly, I enjoy art because it is a medium that I use to learn about myself.

My challenging IB program compels me to spend hours every day drilling numerous subjects (biology, economics, math) into my brain and I rarely have a chance to just sit in my room alone and òthinkó deeply about myself. In maintaining a chaotic IB schedule, the only time when I can just stop thinking about everything and truly be myself is when I am creating a masterpiece with meticulous brushstrokes in an isolated room.

Few of us hard working students take the time to be alone and thus we fail to master the most important subject ? knowledge about self. It is necessary to know about economics and biology for our future careers; but I think it is most important to know ourselves. Even philosopher Socrates said òknow yourself.ó If we truly know ourselves and identify our goal, then we can gain a new perspective and enjoy what we are doing.
