Autumn excursion to the stunning Huang Shan range

For our Autumn Excursion in October, our tenth grade class went to Huangshan, a mountain range in Anhui Province and a popular tourist destination famous for the lovely scenery.

We spent five days in Anhui. The first day started off with the five-hour-long bus ride to Anhui. Then, we visited a local school where we taught the local school students how to play touch rugby, which was really fun. We formed fast friendships. It also gave us the opportunity to improve our communication skills and conversational Chinese.

The next day, we went to Hongcun Village and a bamboo forest where some iconic scenes from the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” were shot. In the village, we went on a scavenger hunt in teams, completing tasks, including having tea and Chinese snacks. Hiking was really nice too. There was a sense of peacefulness being secluded in the bamboo forest.

On the third day, we took a cable car part of the way up the mountain, and hiked the rest of the way up to the summit. It was quite tiring climbing up what seemed like endless flights of stairs, but it was all worth it for the view at the peak. We could see the sky stretching out for miles, and the silhouettes of the other mountains through the clouds. It was indescribably beautiful. We stayed there overnight and the next morning we had to wake up at 5am to hike to the peak and watch the sunrise. Despite the chill, we all really enjoyed the sight. The rest of the day was spent hiking down.

The English assignment we were given on the trip was to write a letter to a friend regarding a trip that we’d like to go on together to three mountains in China, one of which was Huangshan. This trip really allowed us to add lots of personal details into our writing since we’d now been to Huangshan ourselves.

On the last day, we were all sad to leave the stunning Huangshan. It was a very enjoyable and educational trip.
