Band together for the environment
PROTECTING the environment allows us, as students, to engage in environmental issues concerning people globally. Through learning and opportunities to meet other students and discuss our concerns about the environment, we can critically look at the issues with a local and global point of view.
Before finding a solution to a particular situation, we consider how we, as students, could help within our school and community.
At my school, Yew Chung International School, a student-led environmental club allows us to explore and discuss environmental issues, but also to reach set goals. The club tries to reach an annual target of planting 1,000 trees in the deserts of Mongolia to prevent desertification. To reach this goal, we all apply our personal knowledge and skills to create innovative and engaging ideas for fundraising and generating awareness.
Nowadays, there is a high demand for energy. Increasing energy consumption is an issue all over the world and this concerns all of us.
Since it is such a global problem, it’s impossible to solve it in the span of few days with the work of only a few people. Similarly, the need conserve energy has also risen. Therefore, the knowledge provided to the students on how to be proactive should also increase. In my opinion, students within their school community should know how to look ahead, and how their combined actions will slowly help solve the issue.
As such, students who become involved in an environment-related club in school will better understand the roots of the issue and be able to brainstorm ways in which they can address these problems on a daily basis.
Students at other schools could explore this and try to adapt the methods which our school has employed to be more energy efficient. Students can also apply these simple practices at home and encourage their family to follow.
