‘Citizen journalism’ causing profound changes in media
The age of “citizen journalism” has made maintaining a professional standard of journalism more important than ever. For stories that stand out, what matters is not only the story itself, but the back-story. That’s what will make for a stand-out story and will have an impact on readers.
Journalism is the gathering, processing, and dissemination of news and information to the public. News used to be the morning newspaper or the evening news. Now it’s there 24/7/365 and it comes in waves every second of the day.
News impacts everything — stock markets, elections, the pay-check of a celebrity. You name it and you will see how news impacts it. Maintaining a professional standard of journalism is more important than ever.
Unethical practices to dig up some sensational news have in several cases lead to the deaths of innocent citizens. Technology and social media deliver news faster than ever before. Secret smartphone and candid camera video footage create sensational journalism, which has the power to bring governments to their knees.
I decided to explore the world of the citizen journalist to see what gets published on different websites. I noticed a collaboration that is relatively new. Citizens provided videos, professionals tweaked them and packaged them with sensational headlines. Readers/viewers are able to contribute by “liking” the video. We were all collaborating in making the news bigger, as items that were viewed more and “liked” more were more likely to be viewed by others. Bloggers were collaborating with other bloggers; celebrities were following each other on twitter and re-tweeting each other’s messages to expand their followers.
The age of citizen journalism is the age of interdependence.
