DCS students bid to reach out to Syrian refugee children
SCHOOL for Syria is a group of Dulwich College Shanghai students that aims to improve and provide education for Syrian children. It all started last October, after we were challenged by several teachers, in an assembly about the Syrian refugee crisis, to actually do something ourselves and make a contribution. Recognizing our own privilege at Dulwich and the importance of education in our lives, we decided to educate ourselves, and our community, so we could advocate for the education for others in our world. Because of the conflict in Syria, over 3 million Syrian children are currently not attending school and becoming a “Lost Generation.” Access to a good quality education can have a transformative effect on the future of Syrian children, their families, and the economic growth and stability of Syria and the region. We believe education should be a key component in our response to the Syria crisis. Our organization, School for Syria, is committed to educating for peace. We are committed to raising awareness and fund-raising, to support education efforts in Syria, through “Children of Syria-Education‚” (the international NGO Save the Children). We hope to raise US$10,000 (less than 1/10th of the annual tuition of a Dulwich Senior School student), as our first goal!
We hope to involve other campuses and other community-at-large, in our efforts.
