Dedicated athletes and stellar program lead to three-peat APAC victory
THE Concordia cross country team recently ended the season with the girl’s team placing third and the boy’s team bringing home yet another APAC championship.
One cannot deny the grit and dedication our athletes have exhibited at each meet, and that hard work has clearly paid off, contributing to their much-deserved success this season.
The experience and leadership of head coach Becki Bishop has been invaluable to the school’s track and cross country program. Under her guidance, our runners have won three consecutive APAC boys championship in Cross Country, two straight SISAC boys championship in Cross Country, and multiple individual champions at both APAC and SISAC cross country and track and field events.
This feat is not surprising for someone with Bishop’s professional history. As a coach at Western Michigan University she mentored multiple athletes who competed in the NCAA finals; she had a champion in the 10,000 meters at the Drake Relays; and she had an athlete in the 800 meter finals at the 2008 US Olympics Trials.
Bishop started a running club at Concordia nine years ago with seven runners. Today — after years of coaching, mentoring, and encouraging her athletes — she has a cross country team that perennially tops 30 athletes and a track and field program that tops 70, which is amazing for a high school that boasts only 300 students.
Bishop’s legacy continues at multiple universities in North America. Concordia alumni athletes are now competing in both cross country and track and field at Amherst University, Willamette University, and the University of Toronto.
Throughout each of her runner’s career Bishop was been an inspiration, not only on the track but also in life. Bishop’s true sign of success is seen through the sheer numbers of current and former athletes that continue to run, continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and continue to believe “The mind quits long before the body.”
It has been amazing to see her program continue at such a high level, and it has been an honor to be a part of it over the past three years. This season was a testament to Bishop’s knowledge and experience, as well as her athletes’ faith in their coach and their willingness to work hard.
