Dulwich College celebrates reading

AT Dulwich College we take advantage of any opportunity to celebrate the fact we are a reading community. The librarians and teachers make sure reading is promoted throughout the school. This year the school's annual Book Week coincides with the Shanghai Literary Festival. This is a fabulous opportunity for children and adults to widen their horizons of interest in reading. To have the chance to ask questions and engage with a "real" author is a wonderful opportunity to learn and be inspired. We aim to have at least two or three visiting authors come to the school every year to present workshops. The students absolutely love these events.
An important job of our librarians is to ensure students are exposed to a wide variety of literature. To encourage students to read widely, recently all senior school students took part in the BookBuster Reading Challenge. During a whole term, a combination of different genres and time periods had to be covered, to create an impressive, varied reading list.
Librarians work closely with the teachers. All our students, up to the age of 15, are scheduled to pay a weekly visit to one of the three school libraries, with their teacher, where they engage in all kinds of reading promotion activities. A group of older students created "book trailers" which were used to promote the titles amongst students; the chosen books were loaned out almost continuously for the next three months. The annual Year 7 Library Sleepover has become a wonderful tradition at our school.
Thanks to the fact that our libraries are actively part of the students' lives we are able to foster their love of reading.
