Family builds community through love of school sports

ONE year ago we left a great school in the only home my kids had ever known. We worried that it would be a difficult transition, but surprisingly it didn’t take long to feel at home. On our first day in China, before we even had a chance to unpack our suitcases, the doorbell rang. On our doorstep stood two members of the Concordia cross country team, who stopped by to welcome our teenagers to Concordia and show them around Jinqiao. We watched our kids go off in this strange new city with their new teammates, and we knew we were in the right place.

When school started and cross country season got underway, we realized what a truly special place Concordia is. The outstanding coaches pushed the athletes to perform, yet established such a positive, caring environment that allowed them to each succeed individually and bond as a team. Teammates became friends, and friends became family. The same thing happened during track and soccer, proving it is not just about one team — it is part of the culture of Concordia Athletics.

Through sports, our kids have had the opportunity to not only compete locally, but also to travel throughout Asia and compete with other schools. They have raced near the River Kwai in Thailand, run through sweltering fields in Manila, and played soccer in the rain and mud in Guangzhou. Through a shared love of sports, they have been able to experience more of the world.

The kids aren’t the only ones to benefit from Concordia sports, though. Concordia parents are so involved, supportive, and enthusiastic; we’ve met many of our best friends while on the sidelines cheering on our athletes. We organize Phoenix Friday fun when our teams have home games and we enjoy traveling together to away games. Sometimes I think we have more fun than the kids. Team dinners and get-togethers are for the parents to bond as much as the athletes. We know our kids have established deep relationships through their sports, and so have we.

We are right where we belong, and we know our team involvement makes our experiences so much richer. I can’t believe how blessed we are to have found Concordia.
