Fund-raising dinner shows true vision

SAVING children from needlessly losing their eyesight is gaining more public awareness. More than 4 million yuan (US$627,008) has been raised via the Through Your Eyes charity dinner organized by ORBIS International last Sunday night.

Celebrities, entrepreneurs and companies generously donated items for a live auction to raise money.

Taiwanese singer and actress Vivian Hsu donated her Chanel bag, which generated a bid of 200,000 yuan. Taiwan pop legend Jonathan Lee donated a guitar that he used for 52 concerts.

Other donations for the auction included children's paintings donated by beneficiaries of the ORBIS program, modern sculptures from contemporary designers and an autographed jersey from the English Premier League soccer team Liverpool.

In 2012, ORBIS will launch four to five new projects in the provinces of Heilongjiang, Sichuan, Shandong, Guangdong and Yunnan.

These projects aim to strengthen the capacity of local eye-health services to provide affordable, quality medical care to people in need.

All of the donations collected through the charity gala will go directly to support ORBIS programs in China in 2012.

Some of the money will be used to fund a promising young doctor from Heilongjiang, Yunnan or Gansu provinces to go to ORBIS' opthalmology center for six months of training.

Some of the money will also be used to fund six township hospitals in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces with surgical instruments that will be able to treat thousands of patients for many years to come.

Some of the funds will be used to cover the surgeries of seven to 10 children with congenital cataracts, strabismus and other treatable eye diseases.

Also, it will provide the chance for low-income individuals in Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan and Guangdong to receive the eye examinations needed to detect degenerative eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetes. These thorough examinations are the cornerstone of all sight-saving treatments ORBIS provides.
