Hike group discovers its independence
THIS year's bronze trip took place in Nanbeihu, a small town just two hours away from Shanghai. It was a great experience and the challenge forced us to step out of our comfort zones to become a lot more independent. Overall, everyone did a great job, and everyone completed the two-night camp and hikes.
On Friday afternoon, we arrived at a hotel near our camp site. We were introduced to our guides and were divided up into four groups. We then had a briefing about using a compass, reading a map, pack our bags properly and how to deal with any problems that might arise. When the guides were finished talking to us we grabbed all of our things and headed off to our campsite. We all set up our tents and began to cook dinner. We had no idea what challenges and struggles we were about to face the next day!
Saturday was our second day, and it was HARD. Most of us awoke at 6:30am due to the bright sunlight. We were so lucky to have such a great day to hike. Firstly, we had to cook our breakfast, take down our tents and pack our backpacks for the long hike ahead. Our groups left at different times, from different starting points.
From the campsite we had to navigate our way around Nanbeihu, this included climbing mountains and crossing bridges. This was not easy! This first hike was meant to be a seven-hour hike, some groups finished faster than others. We never quite understood teamwork until this trip; if we didn't work together we would probably still be trying to find our way.
Once we were back to camp, we put up our tents and started cooking dinner. Our goal was to do all this before the sun went down, unfortunately for many groups they didn't make it in time. Therefore it was a bit more challenging, although we all made it back safe and sound.
The last day, Sunday, was a fight to the finish. It was another very cold night but we were happy to see the sunshine again.
We cooked our final breakfast and couldn't believe how tired and sore we were from first hike! We had yet another hike to do only this one was only five hours. The hike was shorter, but steeper in some areas and tricky with the navigation. Each group was back in time to board the bus dirty and tired but with many memories.
Overall, we think this trip was a learning experience for everyone, even the teachers.
Although there were struggles, we really got to be independent, and do things on our own, like making our own decisions, even if that meant getting lost now and again. We hope that coming year 10s will take up this opportunity and make the most of the experience!
Thank you to everyone who was on the trip, and we can't wait for the silver trip next year!
