Holidays a great time to experience wider world

As a geography teacher with a real passion for exploring new places, I try to explore China at every opportunity. In the last few years, I鈥檝e visited 鈥渢he greatest hits,鈥 as well as seen the sun rise over Everest, drunk pu鈥檈r tea in Shangri-la, scared myself on plank paths and glass walkways in places like Yellow Mountain and Zhangjiajie and explored some of the diverse landscapes that China has to offer. Having said that, I have established a rule for Chinese New Year and other major public holidays and that is 鈥済et out of China.鈥 Much as I adore life in China, the overwhelming crowds that take over even the most remote locations during public holidays are too much for me.
Last year I led a team of students from NAIS Pudong on expedition to Iceland where we walked on glaciers, gasped at geysers and stared, slack-jawed, at the Northern Lights. The year before I visited Indonesia for the first time and walked into the crater of a volcano. This year I am heading off to Vietnam where I will catch up with an old friend, now teaching in Hanoi.
We will spend the week on a road trip. We will have motorbikes and a beginner鈥檚 understanding of how to ride them. We will have some out of date road maps. We will have some light bags with a couple of changes of clothes and a toothbrush. Firm plans and a clear itinerary? Those are not on the packing list. Our hope is to get off the beaten track in northern Vietnam, experience something of the stunning landscapes and meet and make friends with local people as we go.
