Let your authentic self shine through to school reps

Most applications for the 2015 school year have been completed, but for the upcoming seniors the application machine is just beginning. Being a college counselor has demonstrated to me a few key things that students can do to increase their chances of admissions people not only reviewing their application but also accepting it.
Research, research, and research. Are you really interested in the school? Admissions officers want to see this interest in your application. Know the school culture, current on goings, history, etc — not just the ranking.
• Find your voice. All documentation sent to schools is reviewed. Your essays are important because it helps show who you are. What you do in your spare time, summer holidays, community work, school work, personal interests all provide an impression of who you are. Let your authentic self shine through. In doing so school reps are able to see the real you and decide if you are a good “fit.”
• Extracurricular activities. Activities that demonstrate commitment, leadership and personal development run high with admissions people.
• Challenging curriculum. Schools are looking for academic excellence in students. This does not mean taking easy courses that just boost your GPA. Are you challenging yourself?
• Show sincere interest. For many US schools making an early application that indicates their school is your first choice is very important.
• Build your relationships — schools and counselors. If universities are coming to your high school or city, make every effort to meet and connect with them. Also having good relationships with your counselor and teachers is important. In doing so better reference letters can be written and you never know who your counselor could know at your university of choice.
