More than a sport, an enriching experience

WE have been with the tae kwon do team of the British International School Shanghai, Pudong, since the very beginning. We have seen it grow, and we too have grown a lot because of it.

The school has a really lively program, which not only consists of lessons, but also many other activities. One of the activities we have took part in is a tournament, which we personally find to be the greatest contributor to the level we are at today, as well as being a lot of fun for everyone.

The great thing about the tournaments we have had so far is that everyone made a positive contribution to them. During the tournament, we had to make up to 10 divisions, with ages going as young as 8, and as old as 17.

The level of fighting is very high. We have been lucky to see some of the amazing fights between two competitors with significant age differences.

Another series of very successful activities have been the many sleepovers. Since the beginning of this year, we have already had two, and another upcoming in the near future. These sleepovers have consisted of many team-building activities, but also include sparring matches, swimming, fun games and of course many movies to keep us up while waiting for the midnight sparring sessions.

The community is growing very quickly, and we now have a range of white to green belts and with more people joining, there are always new faces. The faces that disappear are not forgotten, and with their experience, they set out to other countries to continue their practice of tae kwon do there.

The amount of progress we personally have made over the past year is quite amazing. Starting off with no experience in any martial art, and never having heard the term tae kwon do, we have both passed our green belts already. We have been able to reach the half-way milestone to the black belt, and are fairly confident that we will be wearing black belts in the future.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our teacher, Travis Anderson - second-degree black belt, who not only recruited us, but has also kept us interested. He sacrificed his Saturday mornings and many late evenings to plan the great times.
