No shortage of things to do during the vacation

Summertime is here, and with it comes a little extra time and lots of ways to spend it. Your child may have had limited time outdoors during the long winter and high AQI days, so encourage them to get outside this summer. Here are a few ideas to help you craft a meaningful summer experience for your children.
Summer is perfect for exploration, and, for those 鈥渟taycationing鈥 in Shanghai, it鈥檚 a great opportunity to experience the city.
Picnic at one of the many parks in the city. Take a book to read and a ball to kick around.
Explore a neighborhood by scooter, bicycle, or on foot. Take lots of photos. Consider creating a photo book documenting all your summer experiences. Your child could create the captions to go along with each photo.
Visit museums. Shanghai has over a dozen family friendly museums that are fun and educational. Also, consider taking a tour of interesting local spots like the former French concession area or Shanghai Jewish Ghetto.
Take advantage of the extra downtime this summer by letting your children strengthen their love for learning and by trying new activities.
Visit a bookstore and invest in a set of books to read over the summer, or a few trips to a library could be just the thing.
Find opportunities for your child to volunteer their time and energy for a local cause or charity. This type of activity teaches children to give and serve, focusing on others instead of themselves.
Encourage your children to write. Go shopping for a summer writing notebook in which your child can record unique summer experiences.
Teach your child how to cook a special dish or how to bake cookies or cupcakes.
Back in the United States, many high school students find a summer job. Could your child work somewhere during the summer? The money is not important, but experiencing the value of hard work is invaluable.
As parents, we set the tone. Start the summer vacation off on the right foot by setting some important ground rules. For example, placing limits on screen time should definitely be considered. The last thing you want to do is hire the TV or iPad as a babysitter. Remember to take advantage of the summer to enjoy some quality time as a family. Memories are just waiting to be made, so go have some fun with your children. Have a great summer.
