Ocean adventures in the Maldives
ONE of the benefits of living overseas is that it’s possible to travel to remote locations and try new, exciting experiences. My family traveled to the Maldives Islands for holiday recently. During that time, I was able to try parasailing and snorkeling in a beautiful location.
I enjoyed snorkeling in the Maldives. I was able to see so many new things I had never seen before. One thing I remember the most was when I was swimming with a large sea turtle. I just kept on following the turtle and had three guides after me swimming with me and taking photos of the turtle. When I finally looked around, I saw that all the other people who were snorkeling with us had already returned to the boat and were dried off, waiting for me. That’s when I realized that I had been following the turtle for an hour.
It was beautiful under water, with all the colorful fish, mantas, turtles, octopuses, etc. We saw the shadow of a 3-meter-long whale shark, but since I had already returned to the surface, I missed seeing it up close under water.
It wasn’t that hard to swim in the clear water, although the current was strong at times. It was a bit harder to swim with the camera because I couldn’t use that arm to swim with. Apart from that, I got better at using the tube and breathing through it. I did choke on the water a few times, but the more I swam, the better I got at breathing through the tube.
I also had the opportunity to try parasailing in the Maldives. I wasn’t really nervous in the beginning, I was just excited to get up there because I have been waiting to do this for a very long time. We went out on a really small boat further out into the ocean so that we wouldn’t be too close to land. On the boat was me, my sister, my mum and three guys that were helping us. One was driving the boat, one was explaining safety procedures and in case something would go wrong what they would do or what we should do if we wanted to return earlier. The third guy was preparing the parasail and giving us a harness.
I thought that we would sit behind each other, but we sat next to each other instead, so we both were able to share the sights equally. It was a breathtaking view of the ocean.
Nothing went wrong, and we were up in the air for 20 minutes. I enjoyed every minute of it, and hope to do it again, because the view was gorgeous. I had fun with my sister up in the air, and it was not very hot since the wind was blowing.
During my time in the Maldives, I enjoyed challenging myself and learning that I was capable of trying and succeeding in the new experiences!
