鈥楻educe, reuse, refuse and recycle鈥 key to saving our planet

Looking outside the windows of Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong鈥檚 Junior School Library, one can see the beauty of nature. It鈥檚 a space to explore, discover and appreciate the natural environment around the school. However, we realize that our natural environment is being degraded on a daily basis by our own pollution, waste and choices. As such, we have taken the challenge to not only be sustainably conscious but to 鈥渁ct鈥 and be a part of saving our environment.

Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong has an eco-code of four major ideas: reduce, re-use, refuse and recycle. Our community of 鈥淕reen Panthers鈥 continue to challenge us all to protect our natural environment.

In DUCKS, we have been learning about keeping the oceans clean and being careful about waste. A big initiative has been 鈥淣o Waste Wednesdays鈥 where the students 鈥渞efuse鈥 to get too much food and to eat what they have.

In the Junior School there is a community of 鈥淕reen Panther鈥 students who inform the school about current sustainable issues and encourage classrooms to not 鈥渞educe鈥 our energy use. The energy monitors check classrooms to ensure lights and air conditioners are off when classrooms are empty.

Our journey to protect the environment continues as our students come up with their own ideas about how to be 鈥淕reen Panthers.鈥 Currently, Year 6 has a searching for practical ways to recycle across the school.

Additionally, Year 3 has been working with Terra-cycle to collect old toothpaste containers, floss and boxes to be recycled into park benches.

Finally, as the holiday season approaches we are all aware of the amount of waste that can be created with presents, wrapping paper and those plastic bows.

We are re-using our old decorations, wrapping paper and ribbons to create our festive classrooms. As the season comes to a close saving these decorations and paper makes us all aware that we need to use what we have and have what we use. In short, the best way we can 鈥渁ct鈥 to help save our natural environment is to reduce, re-use, refuse and recycle.
