SUIS Gubei celebrates its 10th anniversary

SHANGHAI United International School Gubei opened its doors 10 years ago to welcome its first cohort of students, and since then it has never looked back.

From just over 100 students in the international stream in 2007, it has grown to over 900 in 2017, a growth particularly noticeable in recent years.

Why has it grown? Is it because it offers an excellent teaching and learning environment from Grade 6 to 12? Yes. Is it because students’ achievement externally and independently assessed in the world’s biggest and most prestigious examination for the 16-year-olds, the IGCSE? Yes, that too. Is it because our students go on in Grade 12 to take probably the world’s most demanding academic exam for 18-year-olds, the IB Diploma? Yes again.

But the real reason is that SUIS Gubei is more than a school — it is a community. The excellent academic results come from the philosophy of adding value, contributing to the community and pursuing a holistic approach to education.

Taking these in turn, we begin with “added value.” We are immensely proud of our students achieving maximum scores at IB Diploma; we are immensely proud of our students who have achieved the Best in the World awards from Cambridge IGCSE. Indeed if we were to measure awards per square meter SUIS Gubei would most likely be the best in all of China. We are equally proud of all those students who work hard and get grades far in excess of what might have been expected. It is these students who make the ethos of the school.

The second aspect is contributing to the community whether it be in sports, drama, debating, music, film, creative arts or the wealth of club activities generously supported by the goodwill of a remarkably strong team of teachers. The SUIS Gubei philosophy is that these community aspects are important not only for their intrinsic worth, for the social bonding that takes place and wonderful lifelong memories but also because there is a positive interaction with and impact on academic achievement.

Drama creates confidence and self-belief in students so they come to actively contribute more in lessons; sports allow students to experience the highs and lows of competition, and the importance of teamwork; debating takes students all over the world, including the championship rounds of World Scholars Cup in Yale, or the national round of Model United Nations in Beijing.

The list goes on but one striking aspect is the contribution of the students of SUIS Gubei and the responsibility they take on their shoulders at such a young age.

SUIS Gubei students manage the lighting and sound systems in school productions; prefects run assemblies, organize lunch queues, run homework clubs for younger ones or just provide a sympathetic ear; students as young as Grade 6 put on Shakespeare’s MacBeth and Julius Caesar; they even make their own films.

SUIS Gubei provides the framework for students to open up their potential and visitor after visitor comment on the inner confidence SUIS Gubei students show, on their pride in their appearance and the astonishing Creative Arts program.

SUIS Gubei provides a holistic education. SUIS Gubei gives students the time and space to enjoy that all-too-short childhood and develops intrinsic values in students so that they are resilient and independent enough to thrive at universities all over the world, with the majority going to the USA and the UK.

SUIS Gubei graduates are now in universities all over the world from Cambridge in the UK to UCLA Berkeley in the USA, from France and Germany to Japan and other places. Some of our first graduates are now starting their second degrees or entering on their chosen careers.

Happy 10th anniversary SUIS Gubei!
