1. Shanghai Twist To Shakespeare
The first major production in the new secondary auditorium of British International School Shanghai's Puxi campus was staged on March 5-7. The show, "Much Ado about Nothing," set in 1930s Shanghai, has been greatly enjoyed and highly praised by young and old, by those who know the works of William Shakespeare well and by those for whom this has been a first experience of the work of one of Britain's greatest playwrights.
2. Model United Nations
Concordia International School Shanghai Middle School students recently attended Model United Nations conferences in Beijing and Nanjing of Jiangsu Province. These students spent three months researching topics ranging from child slavery to the effects of melting glaciers on water supplies around the world. In Beijing, Concordia students passed seven of their resolutions with one student delegate winning an award for being the Most Diplomatic.
3. American Paper-cut Artist
Thousands of people watched a free exhibition by Diana Eicher, an American paper-cutting artist, at Donghua University earlier this month. Her black-and-white paper cuts are very different from Chinese red-and-white paper cuts. The exhibition also included her paintings, prints and other art works. This was the first time she exhibited her work in China.
4. Book Week At DUCKS
DUCKS held its annual book week. Students and teachers from both the junior and senior schools came and read to the children last week. The week ended with a wonderful parade in the DUCKS playground, where the children dressed as their favorite book character.
5. The 2012 D'Oscars Film Awards
Dulwich College Shanghai held its inaugural D'Oscars film awards ceremony on March 7 for all of the junior school children and parents. The vision behind the event is to capture the imagination of children through literacy, story telling and film.
6. Shanghai Junior Rugby
The Shanghai Junior Rugby season came to a finale on March 3. The Under 13s had a very strong squad forming two teams that have been dominant all season. Both teams competed strongly on finals day and finished off the season demonstrating Dulwich College Shanghai's dominance by taking out the final in convincing fashion. The Under 15s have developed into two competent teams.
7. Talent Show Helps Out Charity
The Shanghai American School's Pudong Middle School Jazz band performed "Party Rock Anthem" at the annual talent show Pudong Rocks. The event, organized by the High School Student Council, raised nearly 21,000 yuan (US$3,330) for the Rural China Education Foundation.
8. Comparing Education Systems
Dr Zhao Yong signed books and chatted with guests after his presentation at the Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai where he presented his recent research on American/Chinese education systems and discussed what parents and educators must do to meet the challenges and opportunities brought about by globalization and technology.
9. Art Competition Winners
Shanghai Community International School seniors Tiffany Ku and Gabriel Melo recently received awards at the US-based National Scholastic Art Competition held by The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Tiffany received a Gold Medal for her digital collage "Predator." Hers was one of only seven Gold Medals awarded in the International Region. Gabriel was awarded the American Visions Award for the International Region for his photograph "The Muslim." The official awards ceremony will be held at Carnegie Hall in New York City this June.
10. New Assistant Principal
Shanghai Singapore International School welcomed Tan Thong Howe, the newly appointed assistant principal at Xuhui campus. Before joining SSIS, he was with Singapore's Ministry of Education for over 13 years. He has been involved in integrating sports and character development among primary school students.
11. Girl Scouts Celebrate
To mark 100 years of inspiring girls and young women with the ideals of courage, confidence and character, the Shanghai Girl Scouts held a celebration at Shanghai Community International School's Hongqiao campus on March 10. Three-hundred scouts and their families, representing Girl Scout troops from 10 schools all over Shanghai, gathered for the celebration and received their 100th Anniversary Challenge Awards.
12. Spelling Bee Finalists
Three SCIS-HIS students were among a group of 32 finalists from 16 schools across China who qualified to compete in the E. W. Scripps National Spelling Bee's 4th Annual China Regional Finals. Austin Feng from Hangzhou, Kelly Yaur from Pudong and Arushi Rana from Hongqiao represented our campuses on March 10 at the Hongqiao theater.
13. Raising Funds For Children
Primary years students at the Western International School of Shanghai raised funds for WISS partner charity Couleurs de Chine last week. By arranging various activities for the students and staff to enjoy each day, the children were able to raise awareness about their charitable projects and keep that awareness high over the whole week. All the proceeds went to Couleurs de Chine within the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as they work with children from ethnic minorities.
14. From The Heart, For The Heart
The 4th Annual Yew Chung International School of Shanghai Charity Gala was held on March 3 at the Hongta Hotel in Pudong. About 130 guests reveled in the events of the evening featuring the theme "The Rhythm of Carnival." The gala was the culmination of fund-raising activities arranged by the YCIS Shanghai's Parent Organization Pudong, which also included a Heart Wall featuring donations by students, a bake sale and a book sale. A total of 285,000 yuan was raised for Heart to Heart Shanghai, an organization which provides heart surgeries to very low-income Chinese children. Eleven or more children will receive life-changing surgeries as a result of these efforts.
