School prepares graduates 鈥 and parents
Let me let you in on a secret — high school graduation is scary for parents. The kids they’ve sheltered and guided since infancy are now leaving the nest for the untamed world of college.
Fortunately, as Concordia parents, we have been planning this transition for a long time, and we have not been alone. We have had help from a great school and some fantastic teachers who are dedicated to the proposition that every student departing our little corner of Shanghai will succeed in whatever institution of higher education they choose.
High school is a bit like a boot camp for college, especially if it is a good high school. Solid, challenging academics are essential, but so are diverse programs and co-curricular opportunities that let kids hone their talents and explore new interests, which can have a lasting influence on them. For example, my Concordia senior will attend UCLA this fall because of his experience participating in the school’s National History Day program.
The right school works with parents to give kids essential skill sets and habits to prioritize what is important and achieve their best every day. Support and encouragement at home and at school helped my senior stick it out in AP Calculus BC and get through successfully despite being behind the lead pack. That type of drive and passion speaks to the character of the man he has become. So, to my new graduate I say, go ahead. Fly high … just not too close to that California sun.
