Shanghai Girl Scouts host breast cancerawareness event at SCIS Hongqiao

Shanghai Community International School’s Hongqiao campus hosted the 2015 Breast Cancer Awareness Event organized by Shanghai Girl Scouts on October 31.

More than 150 girl scouts participated in the event over the course of a month, raising just under 50,000 yuan (US$7,840), of which 14,000 yuan was raised by SCIS’s very own Girl Scouts Daisy Troop from the Early Childhood Education campus.

On the day of the event, volunteers helped to collect donations from participating girl scouts. This was followed by a walk-a-thon where the girl scouts walked laps around the school’s soccer pitch as a way to say “thank you” to people who generously donated their money for the cause.

All girl scouts came together at the end of the event to form a pink ribbon and then a friendship circle on the school’s playground to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, as part of US Girl Scout traditions, girls work hard through the whole month to raise awareness and money to support breast cancer education and research.

Breast cancer nowadays is one of leading global causes of female deaths. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

The event aims to establish better knowledge of breast cancer in the hope of encouraging women to become more health-conscious, to better protect themselves, and to help others.

Healthy living and an active lifestyle are the core values of the Girl Scouts movement, and in participating in this event girls have the opportunity to apply learnt knowledge and make healthy choices in their lives.

We are delighted at the amazing efforts put in by the girl scouts and the greater community in supporting the fight against cancer.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.
