Simple pleasures can make any break special

Time off from school and work can be both exciting and intimidating. We take comfort in our routines and it can be a challenge to face weeks without them. But vacation can foster its own routines and traditions. If you are traveling or at home, take some extra time to spend with your loved ones, whether that means a longer story time at the end of the day, or a family movie night. If members of your family benefit from pre-planning you can have theme days like Lego day, craft-making day or fitness day.

Vacation time is also useful for checking things off that “this would be fun to do someday” list. Going to a museum, or checking out an interesting restaurant, even something as simple as an IKEA trip that there hasn’t been time for; these are all things that can be worked into time off. Planning these outings as adventures for the family to enjoy together makes the days feel special. Even simple things like a special popcorn or sweet treat for movie night make vacation time more enjoyable.

You might consider having a special family tradition that happens only during time off. In my family we have ice cream for dinner once during each break from school. In October, when we stayed home, that tradition made the week feel special even though we were primarily organizing the house and catching up on our “to do” lists.

Overall, special moments while traveling or staying home are up to your imagination to create.
