Students take responsibility for planet

STUDENTS at Shanghai United International School's Hongqiao campus are showing their enthusiasm toward helping the Earth and being responsible world citizens.

In conjunction with last Friday's Earth Day, SUIS students are raising funds toward the Million Tree Project, which helps farmers in Kulun Qi county in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region reclaim their land, by having trees planted in the surrounding area.

They also held an afternoon of exciting activities. Students enjoyed a picnic lunch, outdoor games hosted by Grade 5 students, a school-wide creative art project. They were dressing in green to reflect the "Think Green" theme.

In conjunction with one of the five essential elements of the International Baccalaureate curriculum, a school-wide art project was held in which students printed T-shirt designs with pictures and messages encouraging people to "think green."

At the Hongqiao campus, students have been demonstrating their green credentials in a variety of ways.

The Girl Scouts group have been busy conducting energy-efficiency surveys of classrooms and school buildings, and classroom eco-monitors have helped ensure that everyone is doing their part to help the environment by finding easy and effective ways to save resources.

Grade 1 students have explored what it means to be "green" and how to be responsible through their unit of inquiry on the 3Rs (reducing, reusing and recycling helps the planet).

Among other things, they have explored which resources they can use less of and how they can help the Earth by reducing certain types of plastic, by trying to use recycled or biodegradable items instead. They also enjoyed bringing in used items for classmates to reuse. All of this positive student-initiated action being taken by many of the younger members of the school sets a great tone to continue the causes behind Earth Day.

Students have come up with a variety of ways that people can all take action and help the planet, including: recycling batteries; turning off air-conditioning and computers when not in the room; cutting down on the amount of disposable plastic bottles and cartons that are thrown away, by using a flask for drinks.
