Talented artists exhibit an array of passions
THE recent AP Studio Art Exhibition at Concordia showcased a collection of artworks that were as vast and diverse in interest and passion as the students who created them. The show represented a range of concentrations and styles and a broad understanding of artistic techniques and media, which were used to explore each artist’s chosen themes in depth.
In her work, Olivia Shen explores the combination of futuristic fashion with natural patterns and inspirations. Shen often uses colored pencils and markers to create the vivid colors in her pieces. She has a great eye for form and color, which will be a useful skill set for her as a fashion design major at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Nancy Lu portrays human nature and experiences through food. Nancy has an “illustrative” style; her work simply looks like it’s meant to be in a book or magazine. She includes many details in her pieces, even in those that look superficially simplistic. Though the subject matter appears delicious and inviting, the messages are meaningful and sometimes even dark. Nancy was accepted to RISD, where she plans to study illustration.
Su Hye Kim creates digital art that is both realistic and fantastical. Her work is a visual interpretation of the writings of her favorite authors and poets, from Mary Shelley to Edgar Allen Poe. It is the deep analysis of the work of these writers that makes Kim’s pieces so profound. Kim, who is interested in studying hospitality, will be attending The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management this fall.
In my work, I attempt to illustrate conflicts in identity, in hopes that viewers will be moved to contemplate how harrowing and confusing these conflicts can seem. Though I enjoy creating art, my passions lie in the sciences, and I’ll be going to Brown University to study neuroscience in the fall. I am sure that art will provide a creative outlet for me amidst my studies.
(Vivian Lu is a Concordia Class of 2016 graduate.)
