The IA Silver Award Trip to Guangzhou

THE trip, overall, was a great experience, making us realize all the things we should be grateful for in life. It was quite a tough experience at times, and pushed everyone to their limits, physically and mentally.
The first day of hiking was a steep climb yet relatively easy. Hiking in the dark was a new adventure for most of us. We were immediately placed in an unknown environment, far outside our comfort zone. One memorable experience on the first day was getting water from the river and boiling it. The struggle to carry the water in pots and pans down a small hill proved to be more and more difficult as time progressed. The time taken to boil all the water was also unexpectedly long.
The second day was probably the most demanding. With a 12-hour hike, generally on flat ground, but often through the strangest of terrains, made us question our sense of direction. However, in the end, we managed to reach our target — exhausted, but successful. We could definitely feel all we had accomplished that day in the aches of our body.
The third and final day of hiking was probably the most enjoyable. While it was a steep climb most of the time, the feeling of standing “on top of the world” (at 1,200 meters) was breathtaking. The view was astonishing, and the fact that we didn’t have to carry our heavy bags was probably what relieved us the most.
