Values a key component of curriculum
What do our kids do when no one is watching? Will they make the right decisions? Will they successfully learn from their failures? School communities should understand the importance and value of character educations programs within schools. It takes a village to raise a child, and at Shanghai American School, we value the partnership that exists between the school and their parents at home. We all want children to be well mannered, and to become ambassadors of the school values we teach and model.
While in attendance at school, and in preparation for the next level of their education, our children learn far more than the academics that are expected. In addition, students learn to respond to the consequences of the decisions that they make and the decisions that directly or indirectly affect them.
While growing up, our children are learning how to become a valued member of our communities. A character education program, whether taught explicitly or whether it is embedded within our Homebase programs, health education programs or even our activities programs — it is a vital part of a child’s education. Through these cornerstone programs of our school and in our classes everyday, students learn from history, how ethical decisions have an impact on our culture and upon who we can become.
We build futures. Learning to make ethical decisions, one based on values taught by the school, and by the family, guide kids toward a process that is reflective in nature that helps them with the next situation that presents itself.
