Warding off the post-graduation blues
ONE thing I often say to students at the British International School Shanghai Puxi is that the vacation they get between graduating in Year 13 and starting university could be the best one they’ll ever get in their lives.
For a start, it’s probably the longest holiday they’ll ever have with IB exams finishing in May and university terms often not starting until mid to late September. Also, being between courses, most students don’t have a great deal of study they need to do, so they have more freedom than they’re ever likely to have in future.
There can sometimes be a down
side to this.
Over the last two years, our graduates have had their thoughts and their time filled with examinations, coursework and all the other demands of the IB Diploma program. Although they will inevitably be relieved to be free of these pressures, they also need to think about how to fill this void to ward off the “graduation blues.”
A good way to deal with this is to replace the academic challenges with other targets and activities — a holiday with friends, sport, or course in Chinese perhaps. Although study is probably the last thing on their minds immediately after graduating, they may even consider a bit of preliminary reading for university courses.
