Young author brings ghostly twist to crime and punishment
A wave of tingles rolled down Jess’ still body. She could feel her powerful magic in the dead air. “Who killed you?” Jess demanded an answer.
“Lily Martin, my ex. May I go now?”
Jess had all the information she needed. She gasped as she opened her hazel-brown eyes and her soul returned to the morgue where her body was waiting, almost as if asleep. After her “outing,” or so she liked to called it, she briskly entered the elevator to go up to the police department. Her unusual abilities to reach out to the dead were not as unique in her odd family tree of witches and wizards. But to the world, her powers had to be kept hidden, as the 2120 British government was more than happy to make her their lab rat.
“I know who killed him,” Jess proudly announced to Detective Tony.
Tony chucked, “Sometimes I wonder why you didn’t become a cop yourself. What’d you find?”
“Hidden talents,” she winked. “We should look into Lily Martin. She was the victim’s ex.”
She peered into the interrogation room as Tony, her best friend, heated up the conversation with Lily. Jess’ grin expanded as she watched Ms. Martin remorsefully sign her confession slip.
Sometimes during her sleep, she would go on one of her “outings” and souls trapped in hell would perturb Jess, begging her to get them out. Raging fire engulfed every corner. Blurred faces would scream and desperately attempt to claw out of the ghastly fire pit. By helping Tony solve murders, she felt as though she would be giving mourning families some closure.
An alarming ringtone saved her from her dreaded visit to hell. “There’s another body,” Tony sighed through the phone…
