17th century baroque ... with a cello used by Bach
MUSIC of the 17th century comes to the Shanghai Grand Theater on Friday and Saturday.
Russian ancient music ensemble Baroque Capella “Golden Age” will perform on Saturday, while the ensemble artistic director Alexander Listratov will stage a cello recital the previous evening.
The ensemble, which was founded in 2002, is widely recognized as one of the leading authorities on the interpretation of ancient European music.
One cello, and two violas and two violins that are used by the ensemble actually date from 17th and 18th centuries.
The cello, that was made in 1680, was once used by Bach, and now used by cellist Listratov, who founded the Ensemble.
“While presentation with most modern musical instruments is specific and clear, the interpretation with ancient instruments requires the audience to carefully savor the sound,” says Listratov.
“The ancient instruments usually have a special tone that’s tender and mild.”
