Art exhibition explores self in dreams and reality
THE ongoing “My Dream as a Dream” is Mo Di’s first solo exhibition in Shanghai, featuring a dozen of her works in recent years.
Dream is the theme in Mo’s creations. In her bizarre images, the self in reality meets with the self in her dream.
She uses ink-wash, acrylic and pencil as media to record her dreams. Her brushstrokes are odd but confident.
The Chinese ink-wash drawing in her work takes on a new freestyle, yet different from the lighthearted cartoonish look of the objects.
Mo’s personal style is particularly reflected in her use of light whether the strong contrast of light and shade in “The Entrance of Dream and Monologue,” or the shaky light in “Ritual” or the halo spreading the whole image in “Lost River.”
Symmetry and mirroring have often been used, seen in the works “My Dream Is a Cage” and “Wonderland.” Looking at her works, whether the little girl or the empty botanic garden, viewers feel strongly attached to the paintings.
Born in Guangzhou, south China’s capital of Guangdong Province, Mo has traveled extensively around the world.
To get along, she has learned to keep adjusting herself to interact with people, the outside world and everything unknown.
By creating “The Entrance of Dream,” Mo declares that she is at another stage in her life, like opening a new entrance.
In this work, a group of female figures sit together around the bonfire, reminding people of a witch rally.
In “The VVitch” series, she pays special attention to the stigmatization of female and thus begins her constant exploration and reflection on this issue.
