Art inspired by Taihang Mountains

“TAIHANG Image,” a show featuring over 100 oil paintings of China’s Taihang Mountains, is on view at Shanghai Art Center through November 17.

The paintings are the work of Chen Xiejun and his daughter Chen Ying. They were exhibited in Shanxi Museum in September and now tour to the artists’ hometown.

Both born in Shanghai, the Chens have long had an emotional attachment to the mountains of northern and central China. The pair have spent years exploring the area’s lofty peaks and breathtaking vistas.

The Taihang Mountains stretch over 400 kilometers from north to south and separate the provinces of Shandong and Shanxi.

The images now of view represent a fusion of the traditions of Chinese landscape painting as well as the language of Western art.

The elder Chen is the former curator of the Shanghai Museum. Chen Ying has been the subject of solo exhibitions both at home and overseas. Her paintings were included in the Shanghai Youth Biennial on multiple occasions.

The Chens have held painting exhibitions together before, including “The Imagery of the Forbidden City” and “The Imagery of Shanghai,” exhibited in Beijing and Shanghai respectively.
