Art puzzles for viewers to decipher
EMERGING artist Zhao Yang is now holding his first ever solo show at both ShanghART Main Space and H-Space until May 3.
The show, entitled “‘ZAO’ by Zhao Yang,” features nearly 30 paintings from the artist, who now lives and works in Beijing.
Zhao is a relative late-bloomer in the world of contemporary Chinese art.
Born in 1970 in Siping, northeast China’s Jilin Province, Zhao graduated from the China Art Academy in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in 1995.
His paintings are reminiscent of Chinese traditional ink works, yet his brushstrokes have a wildness and spontaneity that recalls the Expressionist school.
The artist’s works conjure a puzzle for the viewers, leaving few clues to decipher their meaning.
His themes vary from ancient Gods, animated mundane objects and scenes from a magic universe filled with absurdity and fantasy.
They hint at unfinished narratives marked by solitude and irony, according to the artist. Critics view “Coarseness” as Zhao’s signature. What he reflects under his brushstrokes is far away from the reality, and like a bygone silent movie.
Date: Through May 3, 10am-6pm
Venue: ShanghART Gallery Main Space and H-Space
Address: Bldg 16&18,
50 Moganshan Rd
