Art seen from women’s perspective
A FEMININE perspective on art is on display as the works of nearly 40 women artists from different departments at the Fine Arts Academy of Shanghai University are being shown at an exhibition entitled “If You Are in Full Bloom — Art and Slow Life.”
The work of the women, who are of a wide variety of ages, includes traditional Chinese painting, painting on canvas, printmaking, calligraphy, installations, sculptures, ceramics, videos and graphic design.
“Such diversity and richness, combined with grace and humor, with dynamism and tranquility, fully reveal the overall level of female artists at Shanghai University,” said Hu Jianjun, curator of the exhibition.
One of the highlights at the exhibit is a sculpture created by Gao Shan, 36. Her work, entitled “Livestock,” features a big pig lying down. When viewers press their fingers on the sculpture, they might be surprised to feel a texture like a real pig’s skin.
“It’s because the sculptor used a sponge and colored pigment as the raw materials” Hu said, “She cautiously sculpted layer by layer with the sponge, making the work quite unique.”
Another highlight is a traditional ink-wash painting created by Zhuang Ying, a 26-year-old postgraduate student at Shanghai University. She used pastel watercolor on rice paper to outline the upper body of a woman. The artist meticulously drew the fine hair on the body so that it seemed she was painting under a microscope.
“In my paintings, from deconstruction to reconstruction is a process during which a new life stands up, and I try to find a balance in contradictions and extract touches from normality,” Zhuang said.
